 Extended Position Posting- Youth Director – Grace UMC – 2020

Student Ministry Lead (Director of Youth Ministries)- Grace UMC Newport News, VA part-time


SUMMARY Come foster Christian faith of middle and high school students with the People of Grace! Neighboring Christopher Newport University, Grace United Methodist Church is hiring a part-time Director of Youth Ministries to help us influence a small group of middle and high school students to become maturing disciples who multiply. The person hired for this position will be able to:


  • Plan & lead weekly youth group gatherings or outings (during the school year)
  • Be present Sunday mornings on church campus to build relationships with students, parents & others.
  • Foster effective 2- way communication with parents as well as students
  • Plan & implement summer youth trip for serving others or deepening discipleship
  • Assist pastor in leading biennial Confirmation experiences- typically 9-12 classes and retreats that harmonize with youth ministry activities.
  • Effective internal communication with others like the Church Leadership Team, youth Sunday School class teacher, and  congregation.
  • No fundraisers- generous funding from our church means you'll rarely expend limited time & energy doing fundraisers for normal      trips and activities.




Ministry Context- flexible & permission-giving. Your ministry context will be flexible and “permission-giving” with guidance from our lead pastor who won't micromanage your ministry.  During the academic year most "Sunday work" must happen on the church campus, however "weekday work" can be done off campus if preferred. Summer months typically bring a pause to Youth Ministry at Grace UMC (except a youth trip.) This allows a relaxed pace and more calendar freedom for the Director of Youth Ministries.


Personal attributes. Candidates should be outgoing, motivated and committed Christ- followers excited about connecting with God and students.The successful candidate will also show the ability to communicate well with parents as well as students with media preferred by each person or group.  Equally important is well planned and implemented discipleship activities for youth. If you are hired to be our Student Ministry Lead you’ll be challenged and fulfilled as God transform young lives through your spiritual leadership and faithfully crafted programming (i.e. youth group gatherings, mission trips, and other activities.)


Professional & educational attributes- Candidates from a wide variety of fields and education levels will be considered- though a 4- year college degree and prior experience are preferred for this position of Student Ministry Lead (Director of Youth Ministry.)


Compensation & benefits- Compensation for this quarter-time position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
